All businesses and all financial life decisions must include your Money Management. Investing and Trading are no different.
Proper money management for investing and Trading starts with position-sizing based on the amount of money you are willing to risk on a signal trade.
The table below is an overview of proper position sizing. It shows a hypothetical account size for the calculations. Use your own accordingly.
Basic Money Management and Position Sizing Table
We consider position sizing for a day-trading money plan for the example above, but you apply the same approach (thought process) to swing-trading.
We will risk 1% of our total capital for any trading day and divide that risk capital into four positions or trades.
1% of $100,000 - $1000 / 4 = $250 risk per trade.
For each trade you have used, MTS is a bias (long or short); we need to determine what it will mean that the trade has not worked as expected.
The distance from your entry to your pre-determined “Stop-Loss” is the amount you must calculate the share size.
The larger the stop, the fewer the shares, and vice versa.
For example, $250 risk and a $1 stop-loss = 250 shares, as you see in the table.
If you should lose on four trades in one day, you Stop Trading. Live to trade tomorrow.
Something is wrong! Bad market, you’re not following your plan, etc.
This basic money management will keep you from going bust in your account.
Many don’t reach consistency in the markets because they have no position and money management plan or understanding of either.
